NEW SOUTH WALES SHIPWRECKS

Until 1825, all Australian territory east of the 135th meridian was known as New South Wales. The estbalishment of other colonies and territories since that date reduced its area until  1915, after the transfer of part of Jervis Bay (the naval base) to the Australian Capital Territory. It should be noted the other listings, refer to vessels lost off the current political boundaries. The region around present day Sydney, on Port Jackson, was the first to develop as a free settlement. Before 1830 the majority of white immigrants arrived as convicts, some 77,000, but thereafter the colonial government, based at Sydney, encouraged free settlers by offering land grants and subsidised passage, most to Sydney.

The gold rush of 1850 brought a new wave of immigration, and in the decade of 1850-1860, 602,000 hopefuls arrived in the sunburtnt country. Victoria benefited more from this period, but in the period 1861 to 1900, NSW gained 300,000 more immigrants than did Victoria. And they, of course, came by ship. The favoured route from the United Kingdom and Europe was by way off Cape of Good Hope, through Bass Strait after its discovery in 1798, east along the Gippsland Coast, turning north at Cape Howe for the home stretch along the New South Wales coast, and in to Port Jackson. The danger section was making into Bass Strait, and if that was successful, rounding Cape Howe and Green Cape, and finally, entering Port Jackson.

Needless to say, there are many more immigrant sailing vessels lost on the Victorian and King Island coastlines than along the southern New South Wales coast. But of course statistics are no conssolation for the pool souls lost on the Ly-Ee-Moon at Green Cape, or the Dunbar near Port Jackson heads. This listing contains over two thousand entries - and that does not include the losses at Port Jackson and Newcastle (separate listings). So why so many wrecks? A cursory glance will see  that many vessels lost were coastal traders within New South Wales ports, many assisting the development of northern towns such as Newcastle, Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, Coff Harbour, Byron Bay and finally Tweed Heads on the border of Queensland. To the soyth, coastal traders serviced Wollongong, Jervis Bay, Ulladulla, Batemans Bay, Narooma, Bermagui, Tathra, Merimbula and Eden. Many of these steamers were lost. Add to that the number of 'interstate' steamers, the larger vessels linking the cities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, many with coal out of Newcastle, and you can start to appreciate why New South Wales has the most shipwrecks off its coast.

It is an interesting, if superficial, observation that when talking to New Soules Wales wreck divers, they tend to speak of wrecked steamers, whilst Victorians have a greater propensity for sailing ships. It is also interesting to note that until 1813, private construction of vessels of such a size as to be capable of going to sea for anything more than a pleasant day trip was banned, a regulation designed to prevent the escape of convicts and the monopoly rights of the British owned East India Company. This restricted vessels to smaller construction suitable for inland waters and short coastal distances. Once restructions were lifted, Sydney, and later Newcastle, developed major shipbuilding industries, so most of the vessels built in Australia commenced their maiden voyages from these ports. By the ealy 1930s road and rail transport drastically reduced the movement of goods and pasengers by sea, and when World War 2 broke out many of the coastal steamers were requisitioned for naval work. Several vessels, requisitioned or not, were subsequently sunk or damaged by mines off the NSW southern coast.

Note also that the majority of lives  lost in Victorian and Bass Strait waters occurred in the second half of the 19th century, whereas the most lives lost off the NSW coast was in the first half of the 20th century, from the loss of steamers. The maritime history of New South Wales is a fascinating subject.

References.
New South Wales is very well documented. The main comprehensive listing is arguably the Shipwreck Atlas of New South Wales [SAN], however it provides few details on the vessels documented. The basis of this listing is Loney [LN], with excellent regional data from Gleeson [MGS, MGV], Berry [GB], and Richards [MR].  Bateson [AS1], Noble [NH], Gregory [DG], and Lawson [WL] are also significant. Byron [BNS, BNN] provides information on the current status of many wrecks.

Seventy-seven lives lost; most of her passengers were asleep when she struck and had no chance to escape. She steamed from Sydney on 6 August with 99 passengers and crew, and a mixed cargo which included golden sovereigns. Heavy rain squalls and a south-easterly gale reduced visibility and in the early hours of the morning, when most were asleep, she struck rocks and sank quickly. A big sea swept the bridge, drowning the captain, the chief and second officers. A Court of Inquiry blamed the master for the wreck as he set a course which took the ship near the dreaded Seal Rocks and he had also navigated the ship too close to land throughout the voyage. On 19 August 1895 two steamers, the tugs Marion Mayfield and Gamecock,  searched for the wreck and it was located about a fortnight later, enabling a diver to be lowered to verify its position. As the wreck lay in 30 fathoms, special ‘Heinche’ diving suits were brought out from England and experiments were carried out with them off Sydney Heads, while plans were prepared to recover the £11,000 worth of gold sovereigns carried in the ship’s strongroom; £7,350 was recovered. Steamer Electra involved in rescue. Steamers Stirling, Mermaid, Sophia Ann and Sir William Wallace involved in salvage. Fifty-five lives lost.  [LN],[NH],[SAN],[#DG],[#MGS],[LAH],[WL],[BNN]

She sits upright, with scattered wreckaage from bow to amidships, then reasonably intact to the stern. The deck has collapsed on to the cabins and engine room, but boilers and enhine can be seen.
~ Artifacts recovered may be found at the Newcastle Maritime Museum.

Sank off Jervis Bay, 11 September 1876. One of the worst shipping disasters to occur on the New South Wales coast. She had struck rough weather when off the Ninety Mile Beach in eastern Victoria. Then when off Jervis Bay the propeller shaft broke and water began pouring in. Some sail was set in a desperate attempt to control her, but all attempts to check the leak failed and she began to settle by the stern as water extinguished the boiler fires and the pumps failed. The barque Albert William stood by the sinking steamer. The first lifeboat launched crashed against the barque and sank, drowning most of its occupants, but a second boat successfully carried many to safety. However, a collision between this and a third boat cost more lives, and when darkness fell more than thirty still remained aboard the doomed vessel. At first light it was seen that the Dandenong had gone. A Court of Inquiry found that the captain, officers and crew did all in their power to save the ship. Forty lives were lost in the disaster.  Note: Captain Irwin was the master of the ship Water Lily wrecked at Cape Northumberland; the second mate was Charles McEwan, formerly third mate of the ill-fated British Admiral, one of only nine survivors.
